Weather Announcements
All attempts will be made to make weather announcements by 6:00 a.m. NICC (Cresco Center) will follow accordingly. Following #2020HowardWinn on Twitter will provide you the fastest notice of weather announcements.

Wizard of Oz Production
Congratulations to all the cast and crew that provided an excellent performance at Lime Springs today! It was evident that many hours of preparation went into today's production.

Electronic Requests!
We continually try to reduce our paper usage and increase efficiencies at the same time. We now use electronic request forms for maintenance, technology, and transportation requests.

Text Reader & Speak to Text
Here are a couple programs and features that may help with needs in reading and work completion.
Text Reader
You may highlight any text, use a two-finger touch on the highlighted passage, trace to "Speech" and "Start Speaking." The text will then be read.
Speak to Text
Open the "Notes" icon on your laptop and use a two-finger touch on the notes page, trace to "Speech" and to "Start Talking." The program is very accurate. Notes are filled as the person speaks.
(5) Speak to Text Apps for the iPads

Share Accomplishments!
Teachers are encouraged to send class accomplishments to Keri Schatz (Public Relations) so that others may know the great activities going on every day. Please include pictures.
Twitter: Everyone is encouraged to follow all of the examples of learning shared on Twitter at #2020HowardWinn and #cadetnation.

iPads now Traveling Home
Students in 4th and 5th grade will now be able to take their iPads home on days determined necessary for schoolwork. Parents are asked to read, sign, and return the H-W iPad Policy Booklet's back sheet acknowledging that they have read the care and appropriate use expectations; and to pay the technology assessment prior to iPads traveling home.

Upper Elementary Honor Roll is Discontinued
After conversations with teachers, it is our decision to discontinue the practice of recognizing honor roll in the upper elementary grade levels. Reasons include more classes being graded on skills achieved vs grades provided, and grades only being reported in the core classes. It would be an inaccurate reflection of achievement to report the honor roll solely based upon the grades of 3-4 classes.

Walking School Bus
You will have received a survey (during P-T conference or with your child) to gauge interest in your child joining a Walking School Bus, or your interest in volunteering to guide walks.

This spring, Howard-Winneshiek CSD students will have an opportunity to join a Walking School Bus! A Walking School Bus is a group of students walking to school with one or more responsible supervisors. Walking School Buses get kids active, which is essential for healthy growth and development, academic achievement and classroom behavior.

Upper Explorerland’s Regional Safe Routes to School Liaison is working to start neighborhood-based Walking School Bus routes this spring in Cresco, Elma and Lime Springs and is currently obtaining parent feedback. Depending on interest, routes will operate daily, weekly or monthly.

Interested in volunteering for the Walking School Bus? Looking for more information? Contact Ashley Christensen, Regional Safe Routes to School Liaison, at achristensen@uerpc.org or 563-382-6171.

SINA (School in Need of Assistance)
Information regarding Crestwood's SINA Year 3 designation will be shared at the November Board Meeting on Nov. 11th at Elma. This designation comes from unmet academic trajectories (goals) in reading. As in past years, this involves a parent letter defining SINA, school choice options, and academic support options. More information will be shared via our school website http://www.howard-winn.k12.ia.us/ and local newspapers following the board meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Upcoming...
The Chip Shoppe fundraiser delivery date is Nov. 18th. Deliveries will be made to all elementary schools. Parents, please begin planning to pick up your child's/children's items after school. This is the fundraiser that pays for the district-wide field trips.
