PK-1 Principal/Director of Teaching & Learning
What a shock the cold weather was this week! When it is this cold, we have to keep the students indoors during recess time. Mrs. Einck's kindergarten students made the best of things during literacy class by "hibernating" with their bears and reading on their iPads.
For several weeks, the elementary and junior high students at the Crestwood K-8 building have been earning Cadet Pride tickets. The stacks of tickets had been piling up. Each group of tickets earned a piece of duct tape. What was the incentive to show Cadet Pride? It was for the students to see Mr. Wiley and Mr. Schmauss be duct taped to the wall of the gym. Both teachers were good sports and everyone celebrated Cadet Pride. Following the duct taping, tickets were drawn for teachers and students to compete in relay races. Thanks to Mr. Wiley, Mrs. Tiffany McCabe and the PBIS Team for all the hard work in organizing the PBIS events.
Hour of Code
Several classrooms participated in the "Hour of Code" this week. Students in K-12 are learning computer code this week as part of a nationwide campaign embraced by President Obama. This campaign was initiated to get U.S. students interested in computer science. Through its website, "Hour of Code" lessons are offered in computer coding that are aimed at every age group and accessible on a range of devices. Entire schools have been holding "Hour of Code" sessions for their students. Students also have been logging in at home. Here are some photos of HW students participating in this initiative.
Elementary teachers spent the afternoon building on their working knowledge of the Iowa Core Standards in Literacy. Julie Franzen, Kelly Buehler and Michelle Midthus attended a workshop, "Investigations in the Iowa Core Literacy," in Elkader. These three teachers assisted school improvement consultants from the AEA in helping the staff gain further understanding of the Iowa Core which includes English Language Arts, Literacy in History/Social studies and Technical Subjects.
Building Leadership Teams
Teacher representatives from BLT's met this week to determine the agenda for the Jan. 2 inservice. The staff will have a full day of professional development conducted by trainers from Apple. This will be a Teacher Quality day followed by a work day to prepare for the 2nd semester on Jan. 3.

Music Program in Cresco
The K-1 vocal music program was held in Cresco. They did an excellent job presenting the program, "A Christmas Card for You" on Thursday evening! Thank you to their teacher, Mrs. Barb Holstrom.
Activities at Lime Springs/Chester
The 3rd graders have been studying force and motion in science, and the literacy theme was, "Science at Play." The learning focused on how things work, simple machines and inventions. As a unit wrap-up, Mrs. Adams sent home an optional family challenge to build a mouse-trap powered car to bring to class to help review science learning. Students had a lot of fun with these projects!
The 4th and 5th graders in Mrs. Fravel's room have been using Comic Book Creator as an independent project.
