Howard-Winn in the News
Tuesday evening, I was working on the computer when I heard a TV news reporter mention the Howard-Winn School District. I was proud to hear KIMT TV Channel 3 news at 10 reporting from HW earlier in the day. The news team reported from Mrs. Kim Kerian's classroom showing how iPads are integrated into instruction. The news story and video, "STEM committee releases recommendation in broadband study,"  also featured an interview with Mr. Carver about reliable broadband Internet access and interviews of 1st grade teachers, Mrs. Karen Kuhn, Mrs. Kris Voves and Mrs. Casey Rausch. Mrs. Kuhn stated that with the 1:1 iPads, instruction in the 1st grade is going towards paperless. Mrs. Rausch stated, "1st graders are already blogging, they're podcasting, they're putting up their things on our class blog spot page for not only their parents, but we have hits from Australia, Germany, Alaska, and various other states who are checking out what our 1st graders in Cresco are doing."

It is great to see the district in the news and exerting influence to change learning outcomes for students! HW teachers are using their skills and leadership abilities to transform education in their classrooms. Thanks to KIMT for their report and to those within our district working hard to get the word out!

Skype Session for Kindergarten Students
Mrs. Shekleton, Teacher Librarian, arranged for kindergarten students to Skype with a marine biologist in the Bahamas. Students interacted first-hand with this expert on sharks. Being a photographer, she shared many photos of different types of sharks and their benefit to the ocean ecosystem. Kindergarten students asked excellent questions and participated in the interactive lesson. The Skype lesson fit with the kindergarten literacy theme on oceans and the science unit on properties. Our young students are gaining skills in communicating, asking inquiry questions and categorizing as well as sharpening their sense of curiosity and view of themselves as global learners.

Another event in the Discovery Center was an author visit for HW elementary students. Mrs. Shekleton arranged for this author to come to the district on Nov. 25. In this photo, author Jaime Teahen Sanders reads her book, Adrian's Adventures in Indonesia to K-1 students.

Elementary Vocal Music Program
Crestwood Elementary students in grades K-1 will perform their music program on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School auditorium. The students have been working hard to prepare for the performance along with music teacher, Mrs. Barb Holstrom. Parents, staff and community are invited to attend.

Big Blast
HW Elementary students did well on their annual fundraiser. As a reward, the Chip Shoppe Company will be hosting the Big Blast for all PK-5 students in the K-8 gym on Dec. 17thStudents will be bused from the Cresco Preschool, Elma and Lime Springs/Chester centers to attend. The Big Blast includes play on inflatables in the gym, a dance and popcorn party. Profits from the fundraiser are used for field trips for each grade level and other student activities. Thank you to parents and community for support of the fundraiser!
