Grade Level Assignments

The Howard-Winneshiek Community School District vision is to discover, develop and expand passions, creativity and strengths and the mission is to prepare and empower our students to think creatively, serve, contribute and succeed locally and globally.

This direction can only be accomplished by focusing on instruction and creating a structure that supports teaching and learning. In the face of declining enrollment and funding challenges we must utilize and leverage every available resource.

Rural Iowa is experiencing a decrease in population. Jobs, housing, birthrate and economic opportunities are all contributing factors. The emerging public/private partnership of Task Force: Grow Howard County has the potential to reverse this trend, but time is needed. Good things are on the horizon.

Enrollment levels have dropped to the point that the Howard-Winn Elma campus will be reduced to preschool. Beginning this fall, the practice of combination classrooms and single section grade levels at the Howard-Winn Lime Springs campus will be discontinued. To best provide service and utilization of resources, for the next three years, grades K-3 will be served in Cresco, 4th grade will be served in Lime Springs and grades 5-6 will be served in Cresco. This will be reviewed annually, and future physical plant needs will be identified. I recommended this to the Board of Education after multiple discussions with teachers and District Staff. The Board voted 5-0 to accept.

Next Steps
  • K-3 and 5-12 students will be bused to the Howard-Winn Cresco campus. 4th grade students will be bused to the Howard-Winn Lime Springs campus. Draft Bus routes will be shared in late spring/early summer.
  • “Open House” experiences will be scheduled in late spring for students and parents new to the Cresco or Lime Springs campus. This will be an exciting adventure!
  • Teacher assignments will occur in March/April.

Why not move everyone to Howard-Winn Cresco campus now?
  • The Howard-Winn Cresco campus cannot absorb all the students from the outlying areas at this time. (This may not be the case three years from now.)
  • School entrances at both Crestwood High School and the Elementary/Junior High campuses need to be addressed for safety.
  • Other physical plant needs must be addressed as well. Specifically including, but not limited to: parking, classrooms, auditorium updates, windows, instructional spaces, track resurfacing, lunchrooms and multi-purpose rooms.
  • An in-depth plan for the physical plant will be developed.

Bottom Line...
The Howard-Winneshiek Community School District has become a leader of infusing technology into learning and developing new teaching strategies. Our kids are connecting with learners regionally, nationally and globally. This is very cool.

As a parent, I understand the emotions and excitement of children changing schools and having the bus experience. Please know every effort will be made to make this transition pleasant and smooth.

More information will be forthcoming as details are finalized. Do not hesitate to call me and share your thinking and perspective.

Crestwood FFA representing / Dr. Borlaug Statue Ceremony
Plans are going forward with Crestwood FFA members representing Howard-Winn, our community and our region at the Norman Borlaug statue unveiling in Washington, D.C. on March 25. I am excited to travel with seniors Kaytlin Langreck and Kayleigh Hauber as well as juniors Natalie Knobloch and Abby Hauber. It is very much appreciated that Kayleigh's mother Jamie will chaperon. The TEAM will be flying out of Minneapolis, Minn., on Sunday, March 23 and fly back on Wednesday, March 26. While in D.C. the TEAM will tour the Capitol, see the monuments as well as take part in the statue ceremony. A special THANK YOU to these friends and community members for their financial support to make this happen. We are close to covering the estimated trip costs! THANK YOU and watch for more Updates!

Social Media and the #2020HowardWinn "Brand"
It is WAY cool that many of you are creating a digital footprint for your classrooms and your student! You guys are defining what "locally learning and creating globally" means! One thing I have learned is that "branding" what you know and do is important. The more traffic/connections (views and interactions) with your brand the more opportunities there are. That being said our "core" brand is "2020HowardWinn". Think of that as the trunk of a big tree. Your individual sites connect back to the trunk. The trunk supports the branches and the branches supports the trunk. Together, working and supporting each other, we will grow!

"Shout-Outs"

  • A BIG shout out the Cadet Wrestling Team! (Wrestlers moving on to the next level!) Good Luck Saturday!
  • Good Luck to the Girl's Basketball Team as they begin State Tournament play. Ladies you are having a wonderful season!
  • We are hosting Boys Basketball 1st round State Tournament play, a doubleheader, Monday, Feb. 24! Decorah will play Waukon at 6:30 and the night game will be Crestwood vs. Oelwein. GO CADETS!
  • It was FANTASTIC to go with Crestwood/NICC Automotive classes to the Chicagoland Auto Show! The only car show bigger is in Detroit! WOW! 2015 will be a good year for American car manufacturers.

Had a BLAST being interviewed on SKYPE by 5th grader Carter Henry. Together we figured it out! KWWL, KCRG, and KIMT look out!

One last thing.............
As we move forward, growing and experiencing change, it is important is to stay positive, look for opportunities and not to lose sight of what is truly important: Relationships, Family and Friends.

Last week great news was shared. Board of Education Director Karlos McClure's wife, Janet, along with teacher, wife and parent, Brenda Lentz, both shared they are now cancer free! Fantastic!

This just in! Way to go Howard-Winn Lime Springs!
