School Board Recognition
May is School Board Recognition month.  This year's theme, "Educate!  Advocate!  Celebrate!" recognizes that Iowa's volunteer school board members are providing innovating leadership.  The Howard-Winn School Board is an example of such leadership.  Thank you to each of the Board members for their dedication and commitment to the students of Howard-Winneshiek Schools!

School Board Meeting
The monthly meeting of the School Board was held on May12th in Lime Springs.  There were two reports from the HS.  The presenters did an excellent job of informing the Board and guests about innovative programs at the HS.

Shane Trautsch presented on Virtual Reality Educational Pathways (VREP).  Shane was selected as an emcee at the 2014 VREP Showcase in Pennsylvania.  He described the tutorials he has developed and showed videos.  Shane has also presented at the STEM Festival at NICC about using the Blender program.  When asked what Shane will do next, he said he will be working on 3D printing and the "Be Your Own Boss" STEM Camp this summer.

Crestwood High School teachers Deb Day, Tanya Riehle, Kirstin Kerian and Libby Schwade presented on Flipped Learning in their classrooms.  Other teachers involved, but not present at the meeting, are Justin Denner and Michelle Riedel.  This group made a video, which they shared with the audience.  "Flipped" can be viewed at:

All School Band Concert
The annual Massed Band Festival was held on May 13th.  It is always a special event to see the bands in grades 5-12 perform on the same evening.  Thank you to the students and teachers, Mrs. Polly Jones and Mr. Jason Dobbs, for an excellent performance.  Mrs. Jones was recognized during this event for her last band concert as a teacher in the district.  Mrs. Jones will be retiring at the end of the school year.  Congratulations, Mrs. Jones, and enjoy your retirement!  Thank you for all the years you have served the students of Howard-Winn!

Camp Read S'more
Angela Bries, Howard County Naturalist, presented to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Crestwood Elementary and all students in Elma and Lime Springs this week as part of Camp Read S'more.  How can we tell what kind of plants and animals we see as we observe them in nature?  We draw, sketch, label and make notes in our nature journal and then check out a field guide at the library to help us identify them!  Next week, Angela will present to the K-2 students at Crestwood Elementary.

Kindergarten Field Trip
District kindergarten students went on a field trip to Historic Forestville in Preston, MN this week.  The purpose of the trip is for the students to explore, discover and learn what family life was like in 1899 in rural Forestville.  The students had the chance to play at the park in Lime Springs on their way back to school.  Here are several photos from the field trip.
