A bit about me . . .
I am very excited to be a part of the Howard-Winn team this year.  I started July 1st as the PK-1 Principal and the Director of Teaching and Learning.  I graduated from Riceville High School, received a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in Elementary Education, an M.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in Reading Education, and an M.A. from Iowa State University in Educational Administration.  I taught elementary school in Osage for 20 years before beginning my administrative career at the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School System in Wisconsin as Elementary Principal and Director of Instruction.  I have also worked as Elementary Principal and Technology Coach for West Hancock Community Schools in Britt.  I look forward to working with the teachers, students, and parents of the Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools.

Our new vocal teacher . . .

Schuyler Bieber has taken over the vocal music program in the elementary.  Mr. Bieber grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly.  This is his first teaching job and he is very excited to begin his teaching career here.  In his spare time he enjoys water skiing, wakeboarding, and cooking.  He has formal training as a pastry chef.  He will be working with students in grades Preschool-Sixth Grade.  He is looking forward to building the vocal program and providing our students with varied experiences with vocal music and beginning instrumentals.  We welcome Mr. Bieber.

Our new instrumental teacher . . .

We have a new face in our instrumental music program also. Meghan Ringoen has joined the staff. She is a Cresco native, graduating from Crestwood High School. She received her music degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She previously taught at Marshall middle school in State Center, Iowa for 4 years.

In her free time Ms. Ringoen enjoys scrapbooking, reading, strategy games, yoga, and singing. An interesting fact is that she has never broken a bone. She is looking forward to working with the music department at Howard-Winn. She will be teaching 5th grade band, 6th grade band, and Junior High band. She is also excited to be working in her hometown and being able to be closer to family.

Our preschool teachers have been busy holding parent meetings to discuss what happens when the children attend preschool. The preschool experience provides students with a solid base of social, emotional, and academic experiences. The teachers will be making home visits over the next week to get to know the students and their parents. Preschool starts for the students on Tuesday, September 2nd. The teachers are very excited to begin the year with the students.

The kindergarten team has been busy getting their rooms ready for their students and attending back to school meetings to complete scheduling and planning of curriculum for the beginning of the year. The kindergarten students and parents attended the first day of school together to learn about their room, their teacher, and what they will be learning this year. There were many excited children roaming the hallways and exploring the building and the playground.

First Grade
First grade teachers are welcoming the students with very colorful, exciting rooms with lots of activities planned. They have been busy collaborating on their back to school units of instruction and activities. Students are excited to come back to school to see their friends, play on the playground, and learn new things with their friends. Students and teachers are excited to use the iPads for learning again this year.
