As we start the year. . .
I am thrilled to be starting the year with you at Howard-Winn.  I am confident that you will find Howard-Winn to be an amazing school system with dedicated staff, supportive adults, and eager students!  We take pride in our tradition of excellence at HW and we work diligently to provide your children with the best possible educational opportunities. I encourage you to stop in, call, or email if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Our teachers and staff are incredibly committed to high levels of learning for ALL students, thus we will continue with our Collaborative Teacher Teams and data collection efforts. We find that making data driven decisions for each and every child is truly making a difference in our student achievement! I look forward to sharing our data and success as the year continues.

Working together for School Success
There are many ways you can support your child’s learning at school. Here are a few ideas:
  • Encourage your children to complete their homework each night. Ask them questions about what they are learning!  Read the teacher/classroom blog posts, facebook page, or twitter feed.
  • Spend a few minutes every evening looking over handouts.
  • Fill out forms and return the next day.
  • Spend time talking to your children about their day.
  • Encourage your children to do their best in school.
  • Make sure teachers know you appreciate their efforts.
  • Keep lines of communication open! Contact your child’s teacher immediately if you see a problem. Never hesitate to contact the school. We are here to help!
  • Be involved with school.  Volunteer, attend school functions, and model that school is a priority!
Thank you for all you do to support your children and our school!!

“Teachers teach because they care.  Teaching young people is what they do best.
It requires long hours, patience, and care.”                               ~ Horace Mann

Our preschool teachers hosted Open Houses at each one of our preschool sites.  Preschool students saw the classroom, met their teachers again, put school supplies away, followed multi-step directions to make a ladybug snack, had pictures taken, and were able to decorate a name tag. Some students were so excited, that they didn't want to go home with parents.

Preschool starts for the students on Tuesday, September 2nd.   The teachers and students are very excited to begin the year.

In conjunction with the Preschool Open House in Cresco, the Kessel Kids Natural Playground Committee hosted a fundraising event.  There were Moo Mobile malts, a free will donation meal (hot dogs, chips, beans & apple), prize giveaways, as well as tours of the playground progress so far. Prior to this event, the Playground Committee had raised about $40,000. The estimated cost for the playground is $67,000.

Kindergarten students have jumped right into learning by doing.  They are currently working on building stamina during Daily 5 - Read to Self.  The teacher guides them by modeling what this means and then they practice reading on their own.  They are learning and growing together and they are up to 4 minutes of reading on their own.

First Grade
First grade students have launched the Daily 3 Math curriculum beginning with "Math with Someone". Students love having a voice in their learning as they are allowed to choose the math activity that they do.
In literacy they are working on building the skills started in kindergarten.  Here students are working on building stamina for read to self and read to someone.
