This is the Howard-Winn Class of 2020 at the Borlaug Farm in rural Protivin taken in 2012. They are standing in front of the "one-room" school house both Dr. Borlaug and his father attended. Which one will be the next Dr. Borlaug and change the world?

2014 Dr. Norman Borlaug Harvest Fest
The Inspire Day for area 5th graders on Friday, Sept. 19 will "kick-off" Dr. Norman Borlaug Harvest Fest festivities! 5th graders will tour and experience the Borlaug Farm and work together to package 5,000 meals! Saturday all are invited to be a part of the CROP WALK and Parade! The Meals from the Heartland, 100,000 Meal Packaging Event is Sunday! Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the region are coming to Crestwood High School to make a difference. 50,000 meals to stay in the region and 50,000 to be shared globally. And don't forget the Vocal Music Omelette Breakfast on Sunday morning as well! GREAT and WONDERFUL THINGS are happening!

In addition, please bring a nonperishable food item for the local Food Bank!

Waiver for Technology
With the deployment of digital devices last year, students were assigned an Assessment of $40 for an iPad and $50 for a Laptop. The District received an update notification that the FRED waiver would apply to the Technology Assessment. What this means is that families who qualify for the waiver will be refunded the assessment. Howard-Winn Business Manager Clint Farlinger will be facilitating refunds to families.

District Advisory Group
In October we will "kick-off" the "District Advisory Group". The intent of this initiative is to provide time for stakeholders to network, interact, learn and discuss actions and directions forward for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District. This a great recommendation that came from the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC). The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the K-8 Discovery Center. Topic for the evening: Changing the name of the District from Howard-Winneshiek Community School District to Crestwood Community School District. Meetings will be held in October, November, February, and March with topics of interest to be established by participants. More information will follow.

#FutureReady Pledge
In June 2013, President Obama announced the ConnectED initiative, designed to enrich K-12 education for every student in America. The goal is to empower teachers with the best technology and the training to make the most of it, and empowers students through individualized learning and rich, digital content. This is the direction we have been traveling, and the reality we want to achieve at Howard-Winn, by the year 2020. Howard-Winn is on the move!

Martin Brothers will pay nearly $2 million in a class action lawsuit and the money will be refunded to parents for school lunches from January 2000 to August 2014. Parents who paid for school lunch during the above time frame have until the end of September to file a claim and become a part of the lawsuit. Refunds of $3.50 per student per year will be paid. For complete information go to:  Claims can be filled out on line at
