"The Friendship Bench"
This is the latest addition to our K-8 playground.  "The Friendship Bench" is design as a way for students to connect and seek out new friends. Sitting on the bench is a sign you are looking for a friend to play with or are offering to be a friend to someone.  What a wonderful concept.  We very much appreciate Sue Easler's thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you!

CADETS FORWARD: What is up ahead
The Howard-Winneshiek Community School District is on the move and we are at the "beginning of the beginning" of deep systemic change. Many things are "in play" and this is both an exciting and scary time. There is before us two choices, to be bold, proactive and look for opportunities to grow or be cautious, continue past practices and continue to decline. It is my recommendation to embrace the first choice. At the end of the day it is all about preparing our children for their future. They are watching and learning from our actions on how to deal with change.

Be Positive
A positive attitude will see possibilities that a negative attitude will not recognize. Speculation, gossip and rumors all create negative energy and stifle creativity and imagination. The daily focus is to be educating the kids. "Loose lips sink ships" and kills moral.

Process: take things a step at a time.
Yes rural Iowa is shrinking, yes Howard-Winneshiek is looking at a decline in enrollment and yes the situation will be analyzed, strategic plans made and actions taken that will ensure instructional and student learning integrity. This is a process with the first step certifying the enrollment on October 15. The next step after that is to review the impact the enrollment has on the financial condition and how this impacts instruction. This work will take place in October and November. Again, stay focused on teaching and learning and be positive.

GREAT JOB to the Cadet Marching Band! 3A champions at the Algona Marching Band Contest. They CADETS also took top honors with Best Drum Line and Best Flag Corp.  Very Proud of your efforts and good luck at the State Marching Band Contest in Dubuque on Saturday!
