Have a Wonderful Holiday Season!
Happy Holidays!
It is hard to believe, but the holiday season is fast upon us! It has been an exciting semester filled with exciting learning opportunities in literacy, math and technology. This week I am sharing about STEM learning in 5th grade and 3rd grade. I am also outlining exciting literacy strategies and fun math activities as well. Finally, in the spirit of the holiday, I wanted to showcase a group of students making up Christmas boxes to send out gifts to people around the globe. Please enjoy the videos and pictures of some of our amazing staff and students!

Coding in Math Class!
Shown here is Cameron, a 5th grade student in Mrs. Suckow's class. He is explaining how he coded the shape of a polygon. By coding, the students learn many things aside from just the shape but also how to understand the angles, how to create them and the dimensions. It was really fun to watch the students learn and share this exciting form of learning. The Hour of Code is December 8th - 12th. I am looking forward to seeing what our teachers and students create!

Here you see Mrs. Suckow teaching one of her students how to code. I wonder if I would have done better in geometry if I would have had the opportunities our students have here at Crestwood? Our teachers, across the board, are life-long learners and continue to learn new technologies to teach our students!

3rd Grade had a very fun STEM Day!

Hands On Learning Opportunities
STEM 3rd Grade
Here are some pictures from STEM day 3rd Graders had all day last Tuesday.  This STEM project focused on Bubble Bonanza. The focus activities were on exploring bubbles, what they can and can not do, engineering wands for different purposes such as making the biggest bubble, the smaller bubble, and the most bubbles with one blow. We will continue this after Christmas with more exploration and wrap up with a Bubble Bonanza Exhibition. We got the supplies through our STEM grant last year.

Learning Math & Measurements
It was a lucky day for me on Thursday, December 4th. I was walking through classrooms observing excellent teaching and learning by students, and as I entered Mrs. Midthus's 3rd grade classroom, I knew I came across something great! The students were learning about yards, feet, inches and adding these measurements by using Fruit by the Foot! Every student was engaged, working individually and partnering to help each other learn. It was really excellent! It is important to note, that the students couldn't eat their snack until all of their work was done. Luckily for me, I didn't have to wait...Mrs. Midthus shared a snack with me as I entered the door!

Literacy Block - 90 Minutes Daily
This video is of Mrs. Kuhn and her 2nd grade classroom.
At Crestwood we protect 90 minutes daily of core reading instruction. Our classroom teachers utilize the Daily Five which go beyond center times, to engage students in a variety of reading instructional strategies. One of the Daily Five is always with the classroom teacher utilizing small group instruction with the Iowa Core. Mrs. Kuhn is just one example of teachers working hard for kids!

Mission Statement - Howard Winneshiek Community Schools
"Our mission is to prepare and empower our students to think creatively, serve, contribute and succeed locally and globally."

One of the greatest experiences of my life was when I was a missionary in Montreal, Canada reaching out to homeless young people on the streets. To be able to reach out and give a sandwich or a helping hand is an experience that as the commercials say, is "Priceless." At Crestwood we believe that giving and serving is an extension of becoming a global citizen. Here are some students preparing Christmas boxes to send out to people in need across the globe. Truly inspiring!
