Creating a new structure for learning
Connecting and collaborating with Turkey Valley, South-Winn,
New Hampton and NICC, we are
going to create a new structure for teaching and learning.

We have no choice, no option. In order to survive we all must come together, share resources, talents, celebrate the past but let go of it, and run hard to new thinking.

This means we will all have to reinvent ourselves, redefine our practices and grow. This is about stepping away from 20th century thinking and creating a 21st century system of learning that will serve our children and prepare them for their future.

Each step forward, will bring new perspectives
and opportunities, ideas we would not have seen if we did not move forward.

What we see today:
  • Design Essentials are the foundation pieces to build from.
  • Two-year transition: We have 24 months to create new structure that serves kids and is sustainable.
  • Elementary: Optimum class size, focus on learning to learning how to learn.
  • Secondary: Non-lab core classes taught using technology via internet, ability to learn and enter life.
  • Competency Based Education is an important foundation to transformation.
9:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21
School Board members and NICC representatives along with superintendents will meet at Turkey Valley to continue the conversations. Reports will include updates on schedules and course offerings.

More information and updates will follow.

IMPORTANT Transportation Update
Families open enrolled to Howard-Winn, living in the Riceville School District 2 mile exchange zone. You are still a CADET! The change beginning this fall will be that we will need to establish a pickup point in the Howard-Winneshiek School District for your children to get on the bus. This fall Howard-Winn will no longer be able to pick your kids up at the door. Again this will begin this fall. More information will be forthcoming.

Connecting with Cyprus-Fairbanks Community School District, Houston, Texas http://www.cfisd.net/en/
Last Wednesday administrators from Cyprus-Fairbanks Schools in Houston, Texas, took another virtual tour of Howard-Winn. This time they visited with Project Lead the Way teacher, Nick Ferrie, and Crestwood Secondary English teacher, Deb Day. Students were able to tell the Howard-Winn story. Mrs. Grimm and Mr. Felderman also shared a part of the visit. We very much enjoyed the connecting with educators from Texas and are excited to grow relationships!
