Howard-Winn: 2014-15
Everything has a "beginning, a middle and an end" and it is important to lift up and celebrate each chapter of the adventure.

Last week, and continuing into this week, Howard-Winn has celebrated the end of the 2014-15 school year.  Like a best selling adventure novel, our story's last chapter has been full of bittersweet moments, excitement, tears, smiles, laughs, promise, and "cliff hangers" for the fall.  In all, our story is better than anything Hollywood could dream up. Howard-Winn is a very special place!
CADET NATION: Academic Achievement
  • Dollars for Scholars invested and awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to the class of 2105!
  • Cook-out, games, magician and 200+ parents joined 3rd-6th grade students to celebrate Iowa Assessment achievement results! The number of proficient students increasing from 57% to 74.5% grades 3-6 State assessments. Very COOL!
  • Throughout the year, teachers helped students to seek out, explore, and discover passions and strengths.  Through Twitter, YouTube, Google and other digital tools, learning at Howard-Winn connected and shared with the world.
  • Field trips, award assemblies, and talent shows showcased the talents and potential of CADET NATION!
  • The rate of change at CADET NATION accelerated towards #2020Howard-Winn!
CADET NATION: Service and Competition
This past year CADET NATION modeled service to others, fair play and sportsmanship.
  • CADETS unselfishly volunteered for community service projects, recording hundreds of Silver Cord Hours.
  • CADET Food and Fitness connected High School students with elementary students.
  • Students and staff actively participated in fundraising for the Norman Borlaug Harvest Fest Meal packaging event this fall. With donations still coming in, and a $1 to $1 match,  Crestwood Elementary alone raised $3,345.82. Mrs. Suckow's 5th grade class being the top with collecting $552.59! Thank you and a BIG shout to 5th grade leader Cole Schmauss and his classmates.
  • On the field of competition, in Athletics, Music and Drama, CADETS achieved! State tournament qualifying Wrestling, Track, and Girls Basketball, Division 1 ratings in Speech, Vocal and Instrumental music contests,  CADET NATION made it's presence known!
CADET NATION: Challenge and Change
With the graduation of the class of 2015, CADET NATION experienced challenge and change.
  • The Howard-Winn campus at Elma closed and was gifted to the city of Elma.
  • The decision was made to transition 4th grade from the Howard-Winn Lime Springs/Chester campus to the Crestwood K-8 campus in Cresco. Wednesday's Open House gave students, staff and community members an opportunity to lift up, relive, reminisce and celebrate Lime Springs/Chester Elementary School.
  • Though faced with funding and declining enrollment challenges, CADET NATION continues to look for opportunities and potential.  Like other rural Iowa school districts we are all experiencing change. There is a realization that Howard-Winn will be different, but that in the end, it will all be OK.
In August, CADET NATION will begin a new year.  The 2015-16 school year will bring with it not only challenges but also unlimited potential and possibilities.  CADET NATION is making things happen!

GOOD LUCK CADETS at DRAKE for the STATE MEET!  #proudofyou!

The Howard-Winn TEAM will look a little different this fall
Best wishes and THANK YOU to retirees  Lynn McCormick, Deb Obermann and Becky Halverson. Your commitment, dedication and service to the young people of Howard-Winn is truly valued and appreciated. Your contributions helped shape CADET NATION!

Others who are off to begin new beginnings include Crestwood Principal Tim Felderman and Dean of Students / Activities Director Brian Hilsabeck. Your leadership and courage has inspired us. THANK YOU!

Learning last week looked like..................

Next week will be the last Administrative Update until August. Be sure to check it out for previews of what 2015-16 will bring!  CADET NATION is on the MOVE!
