Welcome Back to School!

The first day of school will be on Monday, August 24th! We are looking forward to reuniting with all of our students to enjoy a full day of school!

Teaching Staff Prepares for the 2015-16 School Year

Our janitors, bus garage, associates and teaching staff have worked very hard to prepare for a fantastic year of learning! The first day will be a full day of school, and to prepare for our students, the teaching staff, administration and associates met to prepare for our students
on Thursday, August 20th.

Second grade teachers collaborate for the new year.

The Elementary Staff spent their morning reviewing policy, procedures and introduced new staff. The staff collaborated to prepare for all avenues of learning. The atmosphere was so positive and the elementary staff is very excited for the new school year!

During the Elementary meeting, specials teachers had the opportunity to address the staff and outline what students would need to access the curriculum and to enjoy a great year of specials in the elementary school.

Secondary Staff collaborating & connecting with the Marshmallow Challenge!

For the opening day at the secondary level, Mr. Rogne, the new building principal, engaged the staff in a teamwork activity called the Marshmallow Challenge! The staff was divided out into their subject areas.

Mr. Rogne looks on as the PE teachers collaborate.

The challenge was to take 20 pieces of spaghetti, one meter of tape, a meter of string and one marshmallow. The tallest, free-standing structure wins. After the challenge, Mr. Rogne showed the staff a Ted Talk about the challenge's history and outcomes. Interestingly enough, the best structures were typically created by kindergarten students!

Introducing Family Case Manager - Denise Headington

Denise Headington

Introducing Denise Headington, our newest member of the our Success Team at Howard-Winneshiek Community School District. Last year, the Success Team saw the need of our school to reach out in a systematic way to the family members of our district. Brenda Lentz wrote a grant and our school board enthusiastically supported the need. In this video, Denise introduces herself and I explain the system that we will follow to access her services. She is a wonderful lady who has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that she brings to the students and families of Howard-Winn. Welcome Mrs. Headington!

We welcomed back our Associate Staff who are vital to the welfare of our
students and to the daily operations of our school.

PowerSchool

Howard-Winn will be utilizing a new Student Information System this year - PowerSchool. It is going to make a significant difference in how we gather data for student behaviors and will connect/sync with Schoology which will be excellent for our secondary teachers and students.

Shown above is the secondary staff receiving professional development from our Howard Winn Secondary staff who were trained in utilizing PowerSchool this summer. On the right, you see Alicia Martin outlining creating class seating lists.

Special Education Parent Meeting
Thursday, September 10th @ 7:00 p.m.
High School Media Center

On Thursday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. we will be hosting a special education parent meeting. I will be doing a short training on Executive Function Supports @ Home as well as getting parent feedback on our special education services - both Likes & Wishes from our parents and caregivers. It is my hope that from this meeting, we will develop a Special Education Parent Support Group.
