CADETS FORWARD!
Howard-Winn is off to a GREAT start! It is wonderful to see everybody back and excited to learn. Cadet Nation is on the move, change is happening.
  • All K-12 CADETS will attend classes on the Crestwood Campus in Cresco this year. Pre-school students will attend at the Spring Ahead Learning Center in Lime Springs and at Kessel Kids in Cresco.
  • We begin year 3 of transformational change: empowering teachers, providing them with time to collaborate, embedding technology into learning and discovery of students' passions and strengths is but a part of our overall transformation of teaching and learning.
  • With a 17% increase on the Iowa Assessments (State Achievement tests) a 90%
graduation rate for last year, and course/dual enrollment offerings from NICC (saving parents between $9,000-$10,000 in college tuition costs) coupled with state tournament appearances in Girls Basketball, Softball, Boys Track and Wrestling, along with division 1 ratings at State Speech, Band and Vocal contests, w
ith $250,000 worth of support for students via the Dollars for Scholars, CADET NATION has positive momentum going into the 2015-16 school year!

On the horizon: Opportunities and Challenges
Declining enrollment and funding will continue to be a challenges into the future. With the Governor's veto of onetime funding last July, it is crucial we continue to look "outside the box", leverage resources and build relationships.

  • Negotiations last year with the Howard-Winn Educational Association (HWEA) and Howard-Winn Clerical Association (HWCA) resulting in below state average settlements, along with the District's Leadership TEAM (Administration, Directors and District office staff) all taking a pay freeze for the 2015-16 school year, is valued and and appreciated.
  • Board Secretary and Business Manager Clint Farlinger (Certified Public Accountant and licensed School Business Official) is teaching Intro to Business for both NICC college and Crestwood graduation credit.
  • Building an Activity Program TEAM to include the Superintendent, clerical support, and Sports Season Event Mangers should produce positive results and a cost savings. I am excited to be working with not only the Activity Coaches and Sponsors, but also Michelle Bakken, Darla Vokaty, Activity Secretary Janice Lansing, the Buildings, Grounds and Transportation staff,  Fall Activity Event Manager Kim Ward, and Account Payable Tanor Vorwald.
  • Relationships are building with New Hampton by collaborating Business Managers along with Family and Consumer Science and Business classes for secondary students.

The bottom line is that all actions go towards fulfilling the District Mission and Vision

Cadet Nation: Sportsmanship and Character
This just in!
Released last Wednesday, 2014-2015 Conference Sportsmanship rating.

After each contest, officials and referees  score the sportsmanship of the athletes and the fans. A score of 1.18 or less is considered exemplary.

Crestwood High School: 1.161!

Someone once told me that the most important thing you have is your reputation and that the only one who can trash it is yourself by your actions.

In the stands, or on the field of competition, poise, character and sportsmanship define who and what we are!

BE PROUD TO BE A CADET
