Thursday was an epic day for education in the United States and the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District was there.

Thursday morning President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  This bill had the overwhelming support of both Houses of Congress and will fundamentally impact how we will do business going forward.  In the afternoon The White House rolled out the National Educational Technology Plan and unveiled tools and strategies for making the plan operational. Included in the "tool
kit" are 50 exemplar videos of which 6 included thinking and actions from CADET NATION. Our partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and the innovation and courage of the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District to change and lead are being lifted up by the US Department of Education and shared across the country. The bottom line is that kids at Howard-Winn are becoming Future Ready.
*Future Ready

*Culture Shift Towards Future Ready Change

*Leveraging External Partnerships

*Personalized Student Learning Tied to Passion

*Attaining Broadband District Wide

*Collaborative Leadership

We are still at the "beginning of the beginning" of change and need to keep moving forward. More information and additional updates will follow. CADETS FORWARD!

Iowa Teacher Leadership and Compensation (TLC)
We have received word that the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District TLC application has been approved! This is FANTASTIC! Over $380,000 in funding will be made available to Howard-Winn The goals of the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System include:
  • Attract able and promising new teachers by offering competitive starting salaries and offering short-term and long-term professional development and leadership opportunities.
  • Retain effective teachers by providing enhanced career opportunities.
  • Promote collaboration by developing and supporting opportunities for teachers in schools and school districts statewide to learn from each other.
  • Reward professional growth and effective teaching by providing pathways for career opportunities that come with increased leadership responsibilities and involve increased compensation.
  • Improve student achievement by strengthening instruction.
A special THANK YOU to Terese Jurgensen, Tim Felderman/Chris Rogne, Brenda Lentz, Alicia Martin, Scott Wiley, Pam Jackson, Julie Franzen, Shirley Sovereign and specifically Sara Grimm for your commitment and servant leadership in making this happen.  CADET NATION is on the MOVE!
