I want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back and am EXCITED for 2016. Together we will face challenges, seek opportunities and celebrate accomplishments.

What is the best way to stay informed about the great things happening at Howard-Winn?
Howard-Winn is one of the largest land mass school districts in Iowa, 426 square miles. As such patrons across Cadet Nation depend on several media outlets. Along with our important local KCZQ 102.3 FM and Cresco Times Plain Dealer, Newspapers, Radio and Television stations from across the region, from Cedar Rapids to Mason City, from Waterloo to Rochester are also used. We very much appreciate KIMT TV's coverage of Cadet Nation.

For the latest up to date Howard-Winn happenings, be sure to check out the District Facebook Page and school Web page

Howard-Winn is committed to being transparent and celebrating all the good things happening! Search Twitter for #2020HowardWinn for "real time" sharing.

On YouTube search for Howard-Winn and see 100+ videos from CADET NATION.

From the District Page  upper left corner, click on "EduVision Channel" to check even more videos!

The rate of change at Howard-Winn continues to accelerate! Please know that patrons are always welcome to tour and see first hand the cool things happening. Contact the District Office, High School Office or Elementary Office, ask for Mr. Carver, Mr. Rogne or Mrs. Grimm and schedule a tour! CADET NATION is on the move!

Looking to 2016
We are now 4 years out from 2020 and are closing in on the target of being a 21st century system of teaching and learning. We continue to move forward towards Competency Based Learning.
Elementary teachers are embedding STEM into thinking, utilizing technology and social media to move teaching beyond the confines of a classroom. Each day learners (teachers and students) are engaged, growing and discovering. Project Lead the Way is challenging students to think. Our partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College is providing students with a "head start" on college credit, saving parents $1,000s of dollars in tuition. Cadet Nation is moving forward!
As we move into 2016, enrollment and funding will be our biggest challenges.  As mentioned before, Iowa is shrinking and there is a strong trend of young people moving to metro/urban areas.  At Howard-Winn we are tracking enrollment on a monthly basis. Since the official October "head county" we have had 10 new student enroll and 16 students move out of the area for a net loss of 6 students.  Because State aid is tied to student enrollment, stagnate growth or a decline means shrinking resources.

Howard-Winn is collaborating and partnering with neighboring school districts, Howard and Winneshiek County economic development, business, industry as well as Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to grow the region.  This means providing opportunities for young people to chose to stay in Howard County, folks who have left to come home to Howard County and to invite and welcome folks who have never been to Howard County.

Collaborating and partnering with our neighbors is a good step forward that will help not only address enrollment but also financial concerns.  In addition to this Howard-Winn is working with other rural school districts for legislation for funding that addresses transportation and Broadband deployment.  Working together we can move forward.

Snow Day
Last Friday was just not good!  Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and flexibility.

Each day Howard-Winn busses cover 1,700 miles, transporting 1,100 students to school and home.

A special THANK YOU Howard-Winn Winn Transportation Direction Brian Swestka, the drivers, the secretaries and Howard-Winn Technology by Heather Klenke at keeping kids safe.  Everyone's contributions are very much valued!

We have been very lucky this year in regards to weather and school delays.

Remember to check #2020HowardWinn for the quickest weather updates.

Howard-Winn is a special place and what makes it special are our students.  A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the CADET Boys Basketball TEAM and the CADET Wrestling Team for volunteering to put up, and then take down, Christmas decorations in Cresco.

The community very much appreciates this contribution of time and energy! This is a way for
the Boys Basketball TEAM and Wrestlers to say THANK YOU to the community for coming out and supporting the TEAMS.

CADET NATION is one made up by many!
