Howard Winn Teachers Invited to Present to
 University of Northern Iowa Faculty
A panel of HW elementary staff was invited to
the University of Northern Iowa on Friday,
February 12 to present to professors from the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.

Over 30 professors attended the presentation including members from early childhood, elementary education, and middle level education, along with school library studies and instructional technology.

During the 90 minute presentation the Howard-Winn staff discussed our vision for education which includes creating a new structure of learning grounded in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), embedding technology seamlessly into instruction, and using social media to break down classroom silos, connecting learners globally.  Specific tools were highlighted for formative and summative assessment, and practicing fine motor skills.

Purposeful iPad use in instruction to avoiding using iPads as digital worksheets was a key point.  Staff also discussed the progression of the use of technology from substitution (using iPads in place of worksheets) to transformation of instruction in which activities are not possible without the technology.

Staff that presented were Megan Merkel (Preschool), Lois Leifeld (Kindergarten), Casey Rausch (1st), Kelly Buehler (2nd), Kim Kerian (3rd), Katie Mahr (4th), Heather Suckow (5th), Carrie McCarville (6th), Denise Shekleton (Library), Heather Klenke (Tech), and Sara Grimm (Principal). John Carver (Superintendent) presented to the group via Skype.  It was great to connect with this group at UNI.  The group will next be visiting Howard-Winn to see this in action.
