A "BIG THANK YOU" to not only Janice and Darla, but also Linda and Sharon.  These ladies are important CADET NATION TEAM members and keep us moving forward.  Darla, Janice, Linda and Sharon, your servant leadership is valued and greatly appreciated.

Though it is cold outside, things are HOT at Howard-Winn!
  • The Board voted unanimously to bring in ESTES Construction to review the physical plants. This includes Crestwood High School, the K-8 Building, athletic fields, parking and traffic patterns. The expectation/product is that a strategic plan for the physical campus is created to be shared at the 150th year celebration in July.  The Board is committed to a physical plant that compliments learning and activities!

  • The Boy's Basketball TEAM is RED HOT with a win over Waverly-Shell Rock on their court, overtime loss to Prairie Du Chien and BIG win against New Hampton. State Tournament momentum is building.
  • CADET Wrestlers advance 7 to District Wrestling Saturday, February 13th. Champions will advance to the State Tournament in Des Moines. February 18th-20th.
  • The Girl's Basketball TEAM heads into the State Tournament play Saturday, hosting New Hampton. Game time 7:00.
  • "SHOUT OUTS" CHS Band students at the Wartburg Honor Band and what a wonderful breakfast at the Vocal Department Omelet breakfast.

Defining what we are doing!
Howard-Winn is leading the way and other want to know how! So, we are partnering with BrightBytes, an educational software company, in order to learn more about our students’ school and home technology use for learning. For that reason, we are reaching out to ask you to take part in the Clarity questionnaire. Your participation is essential in helping us form a more complete picture of technology use for learning in your students’ lives. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy. THANK YOU for your help!

Over the next few weeks, please keep an eye out for an email with more information on how to participate.

Lots of planning and work is being done NOW to prepare for the 2016-17 school year. There is a working DRAFT of the School Calendar, which will look a lot like this year's calendar. Classes will begin on Tuesday, August 23 and again we will operate on "Instructional Hours" instead of "days". Monday professional development for teachers, instead of Wednesday "Early Outs" will continue. The structure of Parent-Teacher conferences and Back to School Nights are being reviewed. Thinking and input will be shared with the District Advisory Group.

Staffing needs are being reviewed and determined. With the decline in enrollment, staff reductions will continue. Business Manager Clint Farlinger, has estimated a target of $400,000 in reductions for 2016-17. More information will follow.

Teacher Leadership and Compensation (TLC) does provided designated funds. These are considered "categorical" and can only be spent for the designated purpose.

So the process as it relates to teachers is this: post, interview and hire the 3 FTE Instructional Coaches. Once completed, the next step will be teacher assignments for 2016-17.

The bottom line is to provide the best education possible for our students with the resources we have. This is an EXCITING time with unlimited potential.

Please note that we have 2.5 hours left. Should we close school or late start and exceed the last 2.5 hours, that time MUST BE MADE UP. This will be added to the end of the school year.

LEARNING LAST WEEK at Howard-Winn looked like.......
