21st Century Learning
This past week Crestwood Elementary vocal instructor Mr. Bieber had 1st and 2nd graders "rapping".  Using the "AutoRap" App, students created rhymes, recorded them on their iPads, and then using the App, turned them into "raps".

It is amazing the creativity and thinking these students displayed.  Poetry + rhythm/beat + technology it was just simply amazing.  If these kids are doing this kind of creating in 1st and 2nd grade, it is hard to imagine what they will be doing as juniors and seniors!

At Crestwood High School last week, Mr. Dennler had students learning how to use EKG sensors in Anatomy class. AMAZING!

Tuesday is #TwitterTuesday at Howard-Winn.  Go to Twitter, then #2020HowardWinn.  Throughout the day Tweets will be posted showcasing Imagination, Collaborating, Creating, Thinking and the Learning going on.

Cadet Nation is on the MOVE!

Budget / Reductions
Last Monday at the Howard-Winneshiek Board of Education meeting proposed reductions were shared. Talented and Gifted would be reduced from two Full Time Employees (FTE) to one, one FTE would be reduced in the elementary, .8 FTE and an associate from Pre-Kindergarten and two FTE teachers from the Junior High.

In addition all other departments have been directed to generate ideas for reductions and or savings. This includes, but not be limited to staff and innovations to operate more efficiently. For example, work and efforts by Larry Trende and his Buildings and Grounds TEAM have resulted in substantial savings to the General Fund.

As has been mentioned previously the target is $400,000 in reductions.  Even in making this mark, contract negotiations and settlements will impact in making our target.  On the plus side District enrollment is +9 as of March 14, 2016.

Proposed 2016-17 School Calendar
The proposed 2016-17 School Calendar was discussed at the March School Board meeting. Note that the first day of classes will be Tuesday, August 23, 2016 with graduation on Sunday, May 21 and the last day of classes Thursday, May 25, 2017.  Martin Luther Day is noted on the calendar as one of the legal holidays. Howard-Winn WILL HAVE CLASS on that day.

The Calendar will be reviewed again at the District Advisory Meeting Wednesday, April 6. A public hearing will be held April 11 at which the Board of Education will vote on adoption.
