TLC Instructional Coaches
The TLC Design TEAM is excited to announce the selection of Instructional Coaches for the 2016-17 school year! At the March 14 School Board meeting, Kim Kerian, Kelly Sorenson, and Heather Suckow will be recommended to serve CADET NATION beginning this fall as K-12 Instructional Coaches.

INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES will not be assigned a classroom and will engage in full-time instructional coaching. Working with individual teachers, PLCs, and/or entire buildings, ICs will:
  • share the responsibility of carrying out the vision, mission, and goals of the school community via the district and school improvement plans
  • collaborate with all teacher leaders, including organizing and leading curriculum meetings
  • provide professional development in a variety of forms including planning and delivering District professional development
  • provide classroom modeling, peer observations and feedback
  • improve students achievement by strengthening instruction and classroom management
  • provide PLC planning, data review, and instructional response to data
  • support teachers in their work with the MTSS process
  • lead curriculum resource adoption and implementation
  • assist in district reporting
  • study research-based classroom strategies, explore which instructional methodologies are appropriate for a specific class or grade level, and share findings with colleagues
  • work outside the contract hours to accomplish the duties associated with this position

The funding stream for this has been allocated by the legislature and is a separate new "bucket". Congratulations Heather, Kim and Kelly. CADET NATION is moving forward.

We track the enrollment on a monthly basis as this is important to future staffing and programing. It goes without saying that we live in a transit society. As of March 1, we are at the same enrollment as we were on the official October 2015 "head count" day. This is a good thing.

We were down 40+ students last fall from the previous year but it appears enrollment has stabilized for now. The head count last fall determines our state funding for the 2016-17 school year. It is projected we will need to make $400,000 in reductions for the upcoming year. This comes on the heels of close to $450,000 in reductions for the current year. We are experiencing what just about every other school district is facing across Iowa, fewer kids and fewer dollars.

It does not take money to think and together we will figure this out and a way forward. Do not panic. More information will follow

Data Coordinator Michelle Bakken and Business Manager Clint Farlinger diligence and focus on tracking enrollment and funding is greatly valued.  Michelle and Clint are important assets! Thank You!

We have exchanged proposals with the Clerical Union, have a tentative 3 year, 2.5% settlement with the Bus Driver's Union and will meet with the Howard-Winneshiek Education Association after March 14.  IMPORTANT It goes without saying the frustration with the Legislature not setting the allowable growth for 2016-17.  Cooperation and flexibility from all is greatly appreciated.

Use of the ICN / Distance learning

Senate Study Bill 3091 / House Study Bill 635 "An Act concerning instruction through the Iowa learning online initiative" has been passed and is now awaiting the Governor's signature. This will give school districts (particularly Howard-Winn) flexibility in providing instruction digitally/online.  THANK YOU State Senator Mary Jo Wilhelm and Representative Sharon Steckman for making this happen! You ROCK!

Shout Outs!
