Class of 2029

Last Thursday evening parents of the class of 2029 gathered for Kindergarten Parent Night.  Meeting in the Discovery Zone in the K-8 building, parents of the Crestwood Cadet Class of 2029 heard about all the wonderful and cool things their children will be involved with in the Fall.

Elementary Principal Sara Grimm and the kindergarten teachers shared the CADET NATION story and the dedication and commitment to prepare and empower all kids to compete and contribute globally. We are EXCITED to have the class of 2029 here in the August!

Lt Governor to tour Howard-Winn
Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will tour Howard-Winn Tuesday May 3, from 2:00 to 3:00.
Tentative Agenda:
  •      2:00 Lt. Governor Reynolds to arrive at the Howard-Winn K-8 campus. Secondary Principal Chris Rogne, Howard-Winn Board members and community members will greet the Lt. Governor. The Lt. Governor will be escorted by 2 Crestwood FFA members
  • 2:05 enter Crestwood Secondary School: CASE, Virtual Reality, Project lead the way Classroom
  • 2:20 move to K-8 campus
  • 2:25 K-8 Campus Pint Size Science
  • 2:30 Press Conference / Remarks (15 minutes)
  • 2:45 Visit 3rd grade and 5th grade classrooms to see ST Math in action
  • 3:05 Exit the building far North door and depart for Lime Springs
After visiting Howard-Winn Lt. Governor Reynolds will go to Lime Springs and Upper Iowa Beef, then back to Cresco to the new Ag Education Building at the Fairgrounds and then Howard County Economic Banquet.  FYI: Tickets for the Banquet are $25. Menu for the evening: Sherlock Shrimp from Ridgeway and Steak from Upper Iowa Beef, Lime Springs.

BTW the Vocal concert for Tuesday night has been backed up to 8:00 to accommodate the Economic Banquet.

Negotiation Update
When negotiating with employees, the District negotiates "total package" compensation.  What this means is salary and insurance together.  We have been lucky that insurance costs have not increased the last two years. This means that monies could be placed on salary.  Had Insurance cost gone up, fewer dollars would have been able to go to salaries.  "Total Package" sometimes confuses citizens in that only salary is printed in the paper, not the total package" (salary + insurance). Negotiation progress thus far:
  • Settled with the bus drivers: 3 year contract, 2.5% total package increase.
  • Settled with Teachers 3.01% total package
  • Clerical Association have yet to settle.
  • Administration, Cooks and Custodians yet to be determined.
THANK YOU to Directors McClure and Vobr for your leadership on the Negotiation committee.

Facility Update
The Facilities Committee (Karlos and Todd along with Clint, Larry and myself) continue to meet and move forward. Architects from DLR, Des Moines were on campus last Wednesday. The goal is to have an architect selected ASAP so as to have concepts for the stadium.

It will be recommended at the May Board meeting to move forward on creating a staff parking lot to the north of the current elementary parking lot.  The work would be done this summer for use in the fall.  This would be a good step forward in addressing elementary parking and traffic patterns.

Teachers and Administrative Assistants: THANK YOU!
This past week Teachers and Administrative Assistants have been lifted up and their servant leadership celebrated.  Contributions from ALL to CADET NATION move us forward! Thank you and much appreciation to those in the offices who "keep the train on the tracks and running on time!"

It is inspiring to walk into classrooms, throughout the District, and see the learning and creating going on. Howard-Winn teachers have my greatest respect.  You are all ROCK STARS!  Good people doing GREAT things!

CADET NATION: Adults / Students ALL Learning and Contributing!
Recently Howard-Winn Food Service Director Cheryl Dickman was asked to present by the Directors of USDA's Team Nutrition of Iowa. She highlighted the CADET Food and Fitness teams and the great things that our students are doing.  She shared how empowering our youth is making a difference in the awareness of good nutrition and physical fitness. Cross age teaching, Brain Breaks, Taste Testing and our Cafeteria Coaching is changing the way we eat and act!

A BIG SHOUT OUT to Preschool teachers Shari Marr and Megan Merkel for presented the Howard-Winn Early Childhood PBIS story.
CADET NATION is making a difference!

Learning at Howard-Winn last week looked like...
