Making a Difference: Thursday morning, the class of 2016 received congratulations and best wishes from Crestwood elementary students.  Wearing their graduation "Cap and Gown" the class of 2016 moved through the halls with "high fives", claps , hugs and cheers!

Sunday, May 22nd the class of 2016 will receive their diplomas and begin the next chapter of their lives.  In my mind, these young people have unlimited potential and I am convinced they will go into the world and make a difference. They already have by sharing graduation excitement with the up and coming CADET NATION!  Personally I want to wish the class of 2016 the very BEST and also sincerely THANK parents for sharing your children with us.

CADET NATION is indeed a special place.  CADETS FORWARD!

Reflections and Scanning the Horizon
With the graduation of the class of 2016, another "mile marker" of success and achievement will be celebrated. It should be noted that from the class of 2016:
  • 33.9% plan to pursue a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math career vs. 28.2% nationally.  This means our kids understand where future employment is and as such have an advantage.
  • 25.3% will be the first in their family to attend college. With the dual enrollment option with NICC, many will enter college with a "head start" over other entering freshman.
  • 87% plan to attend a four year institution.
The dual enrollment option, coupled with the generosity and commitment of the Howard-Winn Dollars for Scholars has saved families hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition!

Pausing for a second to reflect on the 2015-16 school year; much has been accomplished and lots of ground covered.  Success and growth in the classroom, accomplishment and recognition in sports and activities, the class of 2016 has left it's mark and added to the Howard-Winn story! Looking forward, class of 2016 has unlimited potential.

CADET NATION, Howard-Winneshiek Community School District, is a special place!

THANK YOU and Good Luck Seniors!

THANK YOU Mrs. Vobr!
Not only are the Seniors marking a milestone of accomplishment, so too is Mrs. Rhonda Vobr!  She is retiring with many years of faithful service to the District and to the young people of Howard-Winn.

Mrs. Vobr has been the "point person" with the District's Virtual Reality and innovative use of technology program, empowering and inspiring students to grow and learn. She has been a model of what "facilitation learning" looks like!

Recently, she represented Howard-Winn and was a part of the U.S. Department of Education Future Ready video: Personalized Learning Tied to Student Passion

Retirement Party! 11:30, Thursday, May 26, at the Crestwood High School Cafeteria, all are welcome to come, lift up and celebrate with Mrs. Vobr.

Iowa League of Innovative Schools
Last week Howard-Winn had the opportunity to share the #2020HowardWinn story of success and accomplishment.  Howard-Winn was invited to joined 18 other school districts, from across Iowa, that have been designated innovative and "cutting edge".  The event was supported by Prairie Lakes AEA and facilitated by Dr. Scott Mcleod

Howard-Winn, along with representatives from the University of Northern Iowa,  joined representatives from: Ankeny, Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Charles City, Clear Lake, Emmetsburg, Johnston, Muscatine, Nevada, Okoboji, Oskaloosa, Solon, Spirit Lake, Van Meter, Washington, Waukee, Waverly-Shell Rock and West Des Moines.

For me, one of the biggest "take-aways" from the meeting was that change is happening in various spots all over the state, but that no place is further along in system thinking and learning transformation than Howard-Winn.  Creating a K-14 (K-12 + Community College) learning environment, embedding technology + the infrastructure to support it, personalized learning that connects to passions and professions, and broad based community support, Howard-Winn is leading deep systemic change.  The bottom line: Howard-Winn is empowering and giving our students a competitive edge over their peers. CADETS FORWARD!
