Dear Parents and Students,
THANK YOU for attending your child's Back To School Conference.  The staff really enjoyed this time with parents. Teachers were able to inform parents and students about grade level standards and curriculum, the daily schedule of the classroom, pupil progress reporting, special programs, the classroom/school behavior plan, classroom expectations and other pertinent information. Parents and students also had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any specific individual concerns with the teacher. Students brought in their classroom supplies, got to know the teacher and became a little more familiar with the room.

Howard-Winn is utilizing these conferences to better connect and build meaningful relationships with parents and students before the school year starts. Kids do better in school when parents are involved in their academic lives. Attending back-to-school conferences is a great way to establish that relationship. We will extend this relationship by also providing Parent-Teacher conferences in November and again in February. These conferences are a chance to continue conversations between parents and teachers, and to discuss strategies to help students do their best in class. Meetings between the parents and the teacher also let students know that what goes on in school will be shared at home. Parents are also encouraged to request meetings with teachers, principals, school counselors, or other school staff at any time during the school year if they have questions or concerns.

Weather Alerts, School Delays and Closures
Photo from Monitor Recorder Facebook page

Thank you for your vigilance in monitoring the weather this week.  It was very unexpected to already have to cancel school because of weather.  The flooding in some areas was unbelievable.  I hope that your family was able to stay safe.  As we move into the school year and later into the winter weather season keeping informed about weather conditions and school closures is a priority. If road conditions are in question we will always start with a 2 hour delay. The two hour late start gives us time to completely evaluate the situation. The goal is to have "2 hour late starts" announced prior to 6:00 a.m.
How will this be communicated? You have several options:
Twitter at #2020HowardWinn (Instantly know!)
School Messenger: This is an option you can subscribe to in PowerSchool. It will give you the option to receive an email, text message or voice mail to your phone. You may call the office at the elementary if you have questions (563-547-2300).
IOWA SCHOOL ALERTS HAS CHANGED: If you used to receive notification in the past please sign up with the new system Go to: to subscribe.

Area TV and Radio station will also be notified. Please note that if you use a text service from a TV station it may be as much as 30 minutes lag time from when they post it and when it is announced on Social Media.

Resource for student and family support!
Here at Howard-Winneshiek we have a great resource for families that are seeking support to deal with issue in their lives. Mrs. Denise Headington is a great resource for families to connect with.  She works to support families and will work collaboratively with our Howard-Winn staff. She brings many experiences including working for the Iowa Department of Human Services, Lutheran Services in Iowa, and Holy Family Catholic Schools Dioceses of Dubuque.  If you would like to contact Mrs. Headington please call the office 563-547-2300 or email her at

The Crestwood Cadet football players, coaches, and cheerleaders enjoy the support of the younger fans.  However, while attending these school-sponsored events students need to follow these guidelines:

1. No footballs or balls of any type are to be brought in to the stadium.

2. Student made-up football games or any other games are not to be played.

3. Students are to remain around the stadium area. They are not to go out to the practice field area. They must also remain off of the equipment around the football complex.

4. Students are to remain quiet and show respect during the playing of the National Anthem.

5. Students are to remain off the top row of seats of the bleachers and refrain from leaning over the rail and dropping items on spectators.

6. Students should not be running when entering the crowded stadium stands.

7. Students are to listen to the supervising staff members and follow their guidelines.

8. Students from Crestwood are to remain on the home side of the football complex.

Consequences for not following the above listed guidelines:
1. 1st Violation of evening- Student/s will be warned to return to stadium bleacher area by adult supervisors.

2. 2nd Violation of evening- Adult supervisors will ask for name of student/s.
Parents will be notified that student/s will be escorted out of the stadium.
Student/s name will be put on a list. Student/s on this list will not be allowed to attend remainder of home football games. This list will be in the ticket booth for each home event.

As school staff we want the football season to be an enjoyable experience for all. Through attendance at these events school spirit is fostered and developed. The following of these guidelines will insure the successful start of our high school sports season.

Please visit with your child about proper behavior at sporting events and remind them that they are there to watch the game.

Substitute Teachers and Associates Needed
Do you like working with children and helping them learn? Do you enjoy working in a high-energy, creative learning/working environment? If your answer is "YES" we need you! Howard-Winn is looking for substitute teachers and associates to work in our classrooms. In the absence of the regular classroom teacher or associate you would be helping students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for curriculum lessons and providing meaningful instruction for our students in their classrooms. If interested please submit a letter of application and a resume to: Superintendent, 1000 Schroder Drive, Cresco, IA 52136

Classroom Redemption Collection
The Crestwood Cadet PTO continues to sponsor a Classroom Redemption Collection. Students are encouraged to ask friends, neighbors and out town and in town relatives to start collecting on your behalf.  Funds raised from these efforts are used to purchase materials, supplies, and other things for the building and students.  Please be generous in your support for our PTO.
