"I pledge allegiance to the flag..."  Each and everyday of class, our elementary students say the Pledge of Allegiance.  These Kindergarten Cadets are learning it and coming to understand the meaning behind it.

As we enter into the November elections for President of the United States, it is important to remember our children are watching us.  Our actions and how we conduct ourselves are life lessons that will stay with our children forever. Lets be sure we instill in our kids that The United States of America is a Nation of opportunity and potential.  Its important that our kids come to know that hard work, determination, GRIT and service to others will position them to be successful and leaders.

CADETS FORWARD!

September School Board Meeting
Monday, September 12, 2016 7:00p.m. Crestwood High School Library

Agenda items include: Organization for 2016, Stadium update, and regular business.

Air Conditioning
Last Tuesday was a "corker". Heat and humidity made outside recess hot and sticky!  Thank goodness all classrooms at Howard-Winn are air conditioned!  While neighboring schools were getting out due to heat, learning continued right on time, right on track in Cadet Nation! #2020HowardWinn is a "COOL" place to grow and learn!

District Advisory: Year Round School
Last spring and again this fall the District Advisory has brought up the question of year round school.  Rochester Public School's Longfellow Elementary has been operating as a year round school for about 20 years following a schedule of 45 days of class followed by 15 days off.  Summer break is a little longer, but basically kids are in school year round.

Thinking at this point seems to focus on the elementary setting and not necessarily on the secondary (grades 7-12).  Many question have been raised and this is something the District Advisory will continue to study.  Here in Iowa, Indianola and it is believed that Cedar Rapids now operate year round elementary schools.  Academically, year round elementary does address "summer slide" (students taking several weeks to get back into learning after have 3 months off.).  Interesting to note that this past summer Howard-Winn on average served 300+ meals daily.

The District Advisory meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 in the Discovery Zone at the K-8 Building. The meetings are open to the public.

Train Ugly: Trevor Ragan
Monday, September 19, Trevor Ragan will be here to work with Cadet Nation on what it takes to have a positive Mindset. Trevor will share thinking and lessons learned from motivating and training athletes. This has a direct connection and supports our focus on building GRIT.
