Attendance Update
We believe in positive school attendance, knowing that attending school has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school.  Parents/Caregivers/Guardians play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.  Research proves that if a student is not in school (excused or unexcused), these absences have a major impact on their educational progress.

We appreciate your support encouraging regular attendance at school.

This year we will track monthly attendance data and compare to the previous year.   We will share this in the weekly update each month.

Crestwood SecondaryAttendance Rate %School Enrollment
August 201597.87%584
August 201698.04%591

Our average attendance rate is very similar to this time last year.  We do, however, have 7 more students attending in grades 7-12 than we did a year ago at this time.

Meet Mrs. Runyan

What grade levels and subjects do you teach?
I will be teaching accounting to high school students.

Where did you attend college?

BA from Marycrest College, Davenport, IA

How many years have you been an educator? How many years at Howard-Winn?

28 years as a Business Education teacher
5 years as Board Secretary/Business Manager for an area school
First year at Howard-Winn

Was there a particular event or person that inspired you to become an educator?
From 3rd grade on, I just knew I wanted to be a teacher. I liked school, and I had many good teachers from grade school on. At first I thought I wanted to be an English teacher, then math, and finally business because I do like working with numbers that balance.

What is your favorite thing about Howard-Winn?

The pride that students, staff, and the community have in their school in both academics and the extra curricular activities.

Any words of wisdom or advice?
“We are stronger together than we are alone.”
― Walter Payton

More about Mrs. Runyan:

My husband, Dave, and I have lived in Cresco for 20 years. We moved here because we were impressed with the curriculum and the school offered more extra curricular activities than the previous district we lived in. We are parents of 3 children: Alyse, who is the mother of 3 boys -- Landon, Tristan, Caiden; Dan, and Craig. All are graduates of Howard-Winn.

Hobbies include reading, gardening, fishing with my husband, and watching da Bears!
