On almost a daily basis, classrooms at Howard-Winn are utilizing FREE  social media tools to connect students.  It is "normal" for our students to connect and create with learners from across the country and around the globe. At Howard-Winn, learning is no longer limited by our Zip Code.

CADET NATION TO FIGHT HUNGER
Hunger continues to be a problem not only globally, but also here in NE IOWA. Thursday, October 20, Howard-Winn students are coming together for a Meal Packaging event. During the school day, elementary and secondary students will be putting together meals to be distributed here in NE IOWA.  Working with Meals from the Heartland, TEAMS will be working to meet the District goal of packaging 60,000 meals. Community volunteers are welcome to participate. If interested contact John Carver at jcarver@howard-winn.k12.ia.us or call the District office at 563 547 2762.

Enrollment
Monday was the official count day for student enrollment. It does appear we will be down in enrollment 7.06 students from last year. The certified enrollment is based on the number of student physically in the seats + Home School-Dual enrollment + Non-public shared + dual enrollment + special education-tuition out + Crossroads (Decorah) + Open enrollment out LESS/Minus Special Education - Tuition Out + Open enrollment in + Foreign Exchange students.  For 2016-17 the certified enrollment is 1,190.44 compared to 1,197.50 last year, hence down 7.06 students.

Looking back, this is the smallest decrease in enrollment over 7 of the last 10 years. This could signal that the District is stabilizing in enrollment. What it does means is, again this year, State funding/Allowable Growth from the State Legislature will have a great impact on us.

Internally, the district will continue to be strategic and deliberate with resources in order to provide students a 21st century education. Our young people deserve the best.

Bottom line, to grow the district we need to create conditions that attract young families with children to choose Howard-Winn. Cadet Nation is a very special place and we need to share our story!
