Veteran's Day

6th - 12th grades students attended an assembly honoring American Veterans. The program included a section where the meaning of the National Anthem and history of Veteran's Day was shared. The Veterans addressed the students and shared some stories about their time serving the United States.

Several other Veterans shared a brief message and answered questions from the student body.

The Crestwood High School Band and Choir performed and honored the Veterans by sharing their gifts and talents with some patriotic music.

Student Led Conferences

Earlier this month 501 student led conferences were held for parents and students in grades 7-12. This equates to an 87.5% attendance and participation rate from families.  A number of conferences are currently pending and have been rescheduled for the near future.  In cases where a parent or guardian are not able to come to school, students will share their portfolio with another adult at school.

Thank you parents that were able to attend the student led conferences this past week. Considerable research documents that parent involvement in a child's education is directly related to positive outcomes, such as higher academic achievement, student school attendance, student and parent perceptions of classroom and school climate, as well as student attitudes and behavior.  We also want parents to have a good understanding of their child's achievement at school. One of the many ways for parents to be involved in their child's education is to attend school conferences - we appreciate your active involvement.

Weather Alerts, School Delays and Closures
As we move into the winter weather season, keeping informed about weather conditions and school closures is a priority. If road conditions are in question, we will always start with a 2 hour delay. The two hour late start gives us time to completely evaluate the situation. The goal is to have "2 hour late starts" announced prior to 6:00 a.m.

How will this be communicated? You have several options:
Twitter at #2020HowardWinn (Instantly know!)
School Messenger: This is an option you can subscribe to in PowerSchool. It will give you the option to receive an email, text message or voice mail to your phone. You may call the office at the elementary if you have questions (563-547-2300).
IOWA SCHOOL ALERTS HAS CHANGED: If you used to receive notification in the past please sign up with the new system Go to: to subscribe.

NICC Classes:
If classes are cancelled at Howard-Winn they are also cancelled at NICC - Cresco Center.

If we have a 2 hour delay, NICC classes that are scheduled to start before 10:00 AM will be cancelled.  Those classes that are scheduled to start after 10:00 AM will be held as scheduled.

Area TV and Radio stations will also be notified. Please note that if you use a text service from a TV station it may be as much as 30 minutes lag time from when they post it and when it is announced on Social Media.

October Attendance Update
We believe in positive school attendance, knowing that attending school has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school.  Parents/Caregivers/Guardians play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.  Research proves that if a student is not in school (excused or unexcused), these absences have a major impact on their educational progress.

We appreciate your support encouraging regular attendance at school.

This year we will track monthly attendance data and compare to the previous year.   We will share this in the update each month.

Our average attendance rate is consistent when compared to this time last year.  We do, however, have 4 more students enrolled in grades 7-12 than we did a year ago at this time.

On behalf of the cast and crew of the musical, we would like to invite you the CHS auditorium to come and see this year's musical, "Seussical".

Performances are:
Friday, November 11th at 7:30
Saturday, November 12th at 7:30
Sunday, November 13th at 2:00

The cost is just $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Seussical is a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty based on the books of Dr. Seuss (mainly "Horton Hears a Who!", "Horton Hatches the Egg" and "Miss Gertrude McFuzz") that debuted on Broadway in 2000. The play's story is a rather complex amalgamation of many of Seuss's most famous books.
