Health Occupations Academy

Beginning in 2017-2018 Howard-Winneshiek will become part of the Northeast Iowa Health Occupations Academy.  By being part of the academy CHS students will have the opportunity to take the following classes.
  • Introduction to Health Occupations
  • Medical Terminology
  • Certified Nurse Aide
  • Dosage Calculations
  • Principles of Diseases
  • Introduction to Nutrition
Other schools in the consortium are Postville, Riceville, South Winneshiek, and Turkey Valley.  Each school will share the cost of the instructor.  This will be a good opportunity for CHS students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field.

NEIC Student Leadership Team
Students from the Cadet Council met with students from other NEIC schools for the Northeast Iowa Conference Leadership Team Day.

Objectives for the leadership team:

  • Build interconference relationships among our student leaders
  • Build leadership capacity in our student leaders to make an impact in their schools and communities
  • Build a network of resources in Northeast Iowa to add to a growing support system for young people

The students participated in several small group activities and were addressed by two speakers.  Dr. Andrew Last, from Luther College and Mr. Jim Lundberg, Agriculture Instructor from Charles City. Both shared inspirational and applicable messages about leadership.

3A Solo/Small Ensemble Festival
Crestwood High School was recently notified that we were selected to host the Class 3A Solo/Ensemble Festival on March 25th, 2017.  It is anticipated that there will be students from 11 schools in attendance that day.  This will be a great opportunity to for our students to perform and have a "home" field advantage.

Coat Drive
The Cadet Council is sponsoring a "coat drive".  Please bring any new or gently used winter clothing (coats, hats, mittens, scarves) you might have to donate to those in need.  There is a box in the High School office.  You can also bring items to the home wrestling meet next Tuesday, Dec 20.

Substitute Teachers and Associates Needed
Do you like working with children and helping them learn? Do you enjoy working in a high-energy, creative learning/working environment? If your answer is "YES," we need you! Howard-Winn is looking for substitute teachers and associates to work in our classrooms. In the absence of the regular classroom teacher or associate, substitutes would be helping students to learn subject matter and/or skills  required for curriculum lessons and providing meaningful instruction for our students in their classrooms.

Please visit this link for more information about obtaining a Substitute Authorization:

If interested please submit a letter of application and a resume to Superintendent, 1000 Schroder Drive, Cresco, IA 52136

Weather Alerts, School Delays and Closures
As we move into the winter weather season, keeping informed about weather conditions and school closures is a priority. If road conditions are in question, we will always start with a 2 hour delay. The two hour late start gives us time to completely evaluate the situation. The goal is to have "2 hour late starts" announced prior to 6:00 a.m.

How will this be communicated? You have several options:
Twitter at #2020HowardWinn (Instantly know!)
School Messenger: This is an option you can subscribe to in PowerSchool. It will give you the option to receive an email, text message or voice mail to your phone. You may call the office at the elementary if you have questions (563-547-2300).
IOWA SCHOOL ALERTS HAS CHANGED: If you used to receive notification in the past please sign up with the new system Go to:
https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/IAEDU3029/subscriber/new to subscribe.

NICC Classes:
If classes are cancelled at Howard-Winn they are also cancelled at NICC - Cresco Center.

If we have a 2 hour delay, NICC classes that are scheduled to start before 10:00 AM will be cancelled.  Those classes that are scheduled to start after 10:00 AM will be held as scheduled.

Area TV and Radio stations will also be notified. Please note that if you use a text service from a TV station it may be as much as 30 minutes lag time from when they post it and when it is announced on Social Media.

Become an Athletic Official Get Back in the Game

Participation in high school athletics does not have to end with high school graduation. Even if you have been away from the game for awhile, you can get back in the game by becoming a licensed official in any of the sports sanctioned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

As a licensed official, you not only have the opportunity to earn a little extra money, but also the opportunity to be a positive influence in a young person’s life. The hours are somewhat flexible and contracts can be accepted based on a day-to-day availability.
