It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas at #2020Howard-Winn!

Happy Holidays!

Looking back at 1st Semester
It is hard to believe we are closing in on the end of the 1st semester.  Success in the classroom and on the field of athletic competition, CADET NATION is on the move.

CADET NATION CONNECTING
This fall we have had many come to Howard-Winn to see the great and wonderful things happening.  As I have said before, many are talking about change, we are doing it!
  • The Iowa Department of Education came on campus to learn about social and emotional learning .
  • The University of Northern Iowa, College of Education professors and, on December 19 COE Dean Dr. Gaëtane Jean-Marie are all making the trek to CADTE NATION to see first hand the learning going on.
  • Dr. Ryan Wise, Director of the Iowa Department of Education was on campus last October https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3bFI42Qo_4

The last day of classes for the 1st semester is Thursday December 22, 2016.  Classes will resume, and 2nd Semester will begin on Tuesday, January 3, 2016.

Winter Activities Season Underway!
The Winter Activities season is underway and CADET NATION is on the move! CADET Girl's Basketball is undefeated and rank in the Iowa "Top Ten'.  CADET Boy's Basketball is EXCITING to watch as they have played several top TEAMS from Minnesota and Iowa. They are ready for conference play! CADET Wrestlers are tearing it up and what can you say about our Cheerleaders? Their spirit and enthusiasm is keeping us ALL ROCKIN! (Not to mention they have qualified for NATIONAL Competition in Florida!). The Winter Vocal and Instrumental concerts have been OUTSTANDING!

Great KIDS, committed coaches, directors and sponsors, supportive parents and patrons, CADET NATION is a VERY special place!

Author Katherine Hannigan at Howard-Winn!
Students and faculty connected and learned from award winning author Katherine Hannigan last week.  Ms. Hannigan was inspiring and hopefully planted "seeds" with students aspiring to also become authors.

Special THANK YOU to District Teacher-Librarian Denise Shekleton for facilitating this.

Madrigal Dinner
A CADET NATION tradition, the Madrigal Dinner.  This weekend, Saturday and Sunday, the Heritage Center in Cresco comes alive with voices, song and laughter, from the past. Great food, wonderful music and singing, this is very special Holiday tradition.  Best to ALL!

Stadium Update
Bids for the Stadium were opened last Tuesday and I am pleased to share the total project came in at around 1.69 million.  Even though this is over 1.5 million, overall we are in a good place.  The bids do include everything we had asked for: construction, site work, fees and permits, with contractors all being Iowa/local with the exception of the bleacher vender who I believe is out of Minnesota.

Pete from ESTES is in the process of meeting with the contractors and will have a final recommendation for me, to make to the Board of Education for the Monday's meetings.  Monday the BOARD will be presented with the bid recommendations and will vote to award the bids. With the award of the bids work will begin ASAP.  GOOD STUFF!

Technology for learning, how are we doing?
We are partnering with BrightBytes, an educational software company, in order to learn more about our students’ school and home technology use for learning. For that reason, we are reaching out to ask you to take part in the Clarity questionnaire. Your participation is essential in helping us form a more complete picture of technology use for learning in your students’ lives. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy.

After the holidays, please keep an eye out for an email with more information on how to participate. THANK YOU in advance for the input and feedback.

Learning at Howard-Winn last week looked like...
