Mountain Climbers
The Mountain Climber Recognition Program was initiated at Crestwood High School in order to recognize students for improving or maintaining excellence in their academics, behavior, or overall citizenship. Many students face situations that require them to overcome adversity in order for them to reach their full potential in school. Nominated by Crestwood High School students or staff,  this is a testament to these individuals and their positive impact they have had on our school community.  Congratulations to Elizabeth Loberg, Dylan Johnson, Alysa Osmonson and Kevin Pira.  You have made a difference!

The Class of 2017
Sunday, May 21, we will gather in the Crestwood High School Field house to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2017!  It has been an extreme pleasure to know these young people and it is my belief they are "doers" and "achievers". The class of 2017 is a reflection of all that is good and right not only in Howard and Winneshiek counties, but also the State of Iowa.  I have heard many times that the fate of our Nation is in the hands of our young people.  Knowing the class of 2017, our future is in VERY good hands.  God Bless the class of 2017 and their families.

Junior Financial Aid Night
John Holland, from the Iowa College Access Network presented to Juniors and their parents on Tuesday night.  He also presented to the Sophomore class during the day.
The mission of the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) is to help prepare students for future success.

ICAN believes that education leads to greater economic prosperity for individual students, their families, and the communities in which they reside.
It is also a belief that all Iowans benefit as more and more students attain their education and career goals through informed decision-making, translating into greater numbers of educated and skilled workers.
To put it simply, more education and job training equals more success for students and for the communities of Iowa. ICAN’s team of student success advisors helped individuals with life-changing decisions pertaining to college choice, college affordability and financial aid, and career exploration.

Evacuation Drill
We practice safety drills throughout the year to help our students know what to do in an emergency.  We regularly practice Fire Drills, Tornado drills and other security drills, including shelter-in-place, bomb threat, and evacuation drills. On Thursday we practiced an evacuation drill.  The school district is working closely with local authorities to correctly implement these procedures.  The goals of the training drills are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries.  These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills. During this drill, all staff and students, K-12, evacuated to East Park.

Back To School Parent-Teacher Conferences
Howard-Winn will kickoff the 2017-18 school year with Back to School Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, August 23rd.  The P-T conferences will be held from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. for elementary students and parents. Parents will sign up online for an individual conference time that best fits their schedule. Information regarding how to sign up will be mailed out to parents this summer.

The staff is looking forward to this time with parents. Teachers will inform parents and students about grade level standards and curriculum, the daily schedule of the classroom, pupil progress reporting, special programs, the classroom/school behavior plan, classroom expectations and other pertinent information. Parents and students can ask questions and discuss any specific individual concerns with the teacher at this time also. Students will have the opportunity to bring in their classroom supplies, get to know the teacher and become familiar with the room.

Howard-Winn is utilizing these conferences to better connect and build meaningful relationships with parents and students before the school year starts. Kids do better in school when parents are involved in their academic lives. Attending back-to-school conferences is a great way to establish that relationship. We will extend this relationship by also providing Parent-Teacher conferences in November and again in February. These conferences are a chance to continue conversations between parents and teachers, and to discuss strategies to help students do their best in class. Meetings between the parents and the teacher also let students know that what goes on in school will be shared at home. Parents are also encouraged to request meetings with teachers, principals, school counselors, or other school staff at any time during the school year if they have questions or concerns.

The first day of school for Howard-Winn students for the 2017-18 school year will be Thursday, August 24th, 2017.

Cadet Carnival

Our second annual Cadet Pride Carnival was held on Wednesday, May 17th.  Each grade level had a time slot during the day in which they had the opportunity to attend the carnival. Students used their cadet pride bucks to play games and buy snacks at the snack shack.  Students were also given bags to hold prizes.  There was a movie playing in the corner of the gym, so when students ran out of bucks they could watch the movie, and look through their bag of goodies till their time ended.  This celebration was a great reward for students showing their Cadet Pride.

Be Part of the Band at Crestwood Elementary!

4th Grade Parents are invited to attend an informational meeting about band and how to obtain an instrument.  The Be Part of the Band meeting is on Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the Crestwood Elementary Band Room. We are very proud of our music programs and are very excited to extend this invitation!

6th Grade Vocal Concert (& Art Show)

Congratulations to our 6th grade students and Mr. Bieber on their awesome concert Thursday night.  The students showcased their performance skills with several musical pieces.  What a fun way to wrap up their year!  Way to go!  Before the show the audience was able to walk through the hall and see some of the students' artwork on display.  What talent we have at Crestwood!
