Winter is here!
A BIG shout out to the transportation and buildings and grounds staff. You keep the driveways and parking lots plowed, the building warm and dry and transport daily 800+ students over 1,700 miles. Despite weather conditions, your commitment to provide a positive, safe, physical environment for learning is very much valued and appreciated.
YOU are an important part of CADET NATION!

2017: Ready, Set, GO!
First semester is in the books and we are off and running into second semester. Getting back to school, it has been GREAT hearing about the adventures students and staff had over winter break. Traveling, staying at home, playing games, snowmobiling, spending time with family and friends, it seems everyone is rested, batteries charged and we are "ready to go"! Thanks to Mr. Winter, winter break was extended by one day.

2017 has unlimited possibilities and opportunities. CADET NATION is on the move. To all WELCOME BACK and "Let's ROCK!"

HOWARD-WINN Recognized
The U.S. Department of Education Policy Paper for December 2016 focused on Teacher Preparation programs.

The report outlined and lifted up skills and thinking universities and colleges should be including in preparing teachers to teach in the 21st century.

Howard-Winn was cited in the report as an example of innovation and forward thinking. The Howard-Winn story was shared how teachers have grown and embedded technology into instruction. To read the full report go to:

Hours of Instruction Missed
The Howard-Winneshiek school calendar is based on hours of instruction and not on "days". We built in an additional "64 hours" to address late starts, closures due to weather or other events.

For students, any instructional hours missed beyond the allocated 64 hours MUST be made up. As of January 7, 2017 we have 37.5 hours remaining.

The Teacher contract is on "days'. This means that any days (total days) that are missed, by contract, are to be made up. As of January 7, teachers have 3 contract days to make up. Winter is here and we are not "out of the woods" yet. A "BIG SHOUT OUT" to Activities Secretary Janice Lancing for posting and keeping track of the hours.

Howard-Winn receives recognition from Iowa Department of Education
Iowa school districts have several reports required by law to complete for the Iowa Department of Education each year. These report are important, addressing everything from enrollment  to school finance to nutrition. Districts completing reports on time receive a "Gold Star" rating. Districts that complete reports on time, requiring no modifications or correction receive a "Platinum Star" rating. CONGRATULATIONS to Howard-Winn office staff and principals for receiving a PLATINUM RATING! This means everything was done correctly the first time! JOB WELL DONE!

  • Be sure to support and follow the CADETS in action on the hardwood and on the Wrestling Mat! Good kids doing GREAT things. CADETS FORWARD!

  • THANK YOU CADET Wrestlers and Coaches for helping to take down the holiday decorations.
