Dear Parents,
Birds tweeting, flowers blooming, and warmer temperatures (well at least a few days of warmth) all point to the same fact - summer is coming and we are ready to begin wrapping up another successful school year. The school is buzzing with exciting events and field trips. I hope you have the chance to talk to your child about the fabulous activities and celebrations we have planned to wrap-up the year.

As the students get antsy for the end of the year, this is also a great time for an increased focus on social relationships. I ask that you continue to talk about our school "CADET PRIDE" expectations at home: to be safe, respectful and responsible. We continue to remind students what the behaviors look and sound like at school. Frequent compliments when you see excellent behavior goes a long way to encourage positive behavior choices. Our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team has learned that for every negative comment that is made to a child, 4 positive comments should be made. It is easy to see the good choices once you start looking for it.

We look forward to ending our school year with a cheer for all the great work we have accomplished. Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Toolkit for Parents

The National PTA has published a Readiness Roadmap Toolkit for Parents and Students
The National Parent Teacher Association, in conjunction with Learning Heroes and Univision, has released the Readiness Roadmap Toolkit, featuring dozens of released items designed to help parents work with their children to ensure they are meeting grade-level standards for success. The portal, designed around the findings of a study of more than 1,300 parents of K-8 students nationwide, has robust guidelines and toolkits that lay out the core competencies expected of students between Kindergarten and 8th Grade.

In addition to rubrics, sample items and other tools for parents to help their children grow and master important concepts in English Language Arts and Math, the Readiness Roadmap has interactive guides for parents to get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, to plan for their child's college years, and much more. The toolkit also has tools to help kids remain focused in the classroom, as well as mentally and physically healthy as they grow.

Cadet Carnival

The PBIS team would like to announce that we will be having the second annual Cadet Pride Carnival on Wednesday, May 17th.  Each grade level will have a time slot during the day in which they will have the opportunity to attend the carnival. Students attending the carnival will use their cadet pride bucks to play games and buy snacks at the snack shack.  Students will be given bags to hold prizes.  There will be a movie playing in the corner of the gym, so if students run out of bucks they can watch the movie, and look through their bag of goodies till their time ends.  This is a celebration for expected behaviors and showing Cadet Pride.

If your answer is "YES" we need you! Howard-Winn is looking for substitute teachers and associates to work in our classrooms. In the absence of the regular classroom teacher or associate you would be helping students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for curriculum lessons and providing meaningful instruction for our students in their classrooms. If interested please submit a letter of application and a resume to: Superintendent, 1000 Schroder Drive, Cresco, IA 52136
